are you guys fucking incapable of reading that last sentence or something
the list is NOT going “don’t dress up in a cultural costume,” it’s going “don’t fucking dress up as a cultural STEREOTYPE.” Listen, I don’t know about y’all, and maybe you’ve all just been lucky enough to never deal with it, but seeing people fuck around with your culture—the culture that is a PART of you and how YOU grew up, things that are IMPORTANT to you—and downgrade it to a widely accepted and completely wrong stereotype is an incredibly shitty feeling and I hope to god no one ever has to experience it.
Interest in a culture doesn’t give you the right to dress up as a stereotype either. It’s AWESOME that you’re interested, people should be interested in other cultures! And if you want to dress up, more power to you! Just don’t boil an entire culture—filled with traditions and real people who are still richly involved in them—down to stereotypes and you’ll be fine. : >
