so after they announced the sailor moon anime reboot coming out in 2013, i’ve been filled with a mixture of excitement and fear. i fucking love sailor moon. it is the number one thing i loved as a kid, all through highschool, and now. it even edges out muppets and neopets sometimes. it is very important to me.
my number one fear with the new show is that it’s going to be sharp and ugly and really sexed-up and grown-up and grimdark in an effort to distance itself from the material people fell in love with 20 years ago and love to this day. they’ve said it’s going to be aimed at women who were fans of the show growing up, and i hope that means that they’re going to remember that we fell in love with sailor moon because it was silly sometimes and beautiful sometimes and kick-ass sometimes and serious sometimes, and that all of those things go in to what makes sailor moon so fantastic.
i gave drawing a darker, more adult-looking sailor moon, and i don’t know how i feel about it. on one hand, i feel like it could be done really well, and on the other hand, i feel like it could be totally wrong for the source material and end up really disappointing. only time will tell.
