Frank Turner - Glory Hallelujah

Brothers and sisters, have you heard the news?
The storm has lifted and there’s nothing to lose,
So swap your confirmation for your dancing shoes,
Because there never was no God.

I spent all morning at a christening for a distant relative of mine that I’m not entirely sure what the proper terminology is for (my father’s cousin’s son makes him my…second cousin? Pretty sure it’s second cousin.)

There is nothing more uncomfortable for me than sitting in a religious service of any variety and being expected to participate.

No cowering in the dark before these overbearing priests,
Not waiting until we die until we restitute the meek,
No blaming all our failings on imaginary beasts,
Because there never was no God.

The sermon itself was really…faith heavy.  Growing up catholic the priest didn’t really focus on that - this was all “bad things happen to good people because god said so” and I just mentally called shenanigans on everything.  I can only tolerate so much bullshit.

I know you’re scared of dying man and I am too,
But just pretending it’s not happening isn’t gonna see us through,
If we accept that there’s an end game and we haven’t got much time,
Then in the here and now then we can try and do things right.
We’d be our own Salvation Army and together we’d believe
In all the wondrous things mere mortals can achieve

The kid started screaming and crying when the pastor poured the holy water on him.  I have hope for my young cousins - that they’ll decide what’s right for them when they’re old enough, not what tradition and society dictates.

There is no God,
So clap your hands together,
There is no God,
No heaven and no hell.
There is no God,
We’re all in this together,
There is no God,
So ring that victory bell.
