A reader sent me an Ask about it and had an excellent point: “On a day that is momentous for the furthering of rights for actual, nonfictional, flesh-and-blood human beings, for ANYONE to essentially be like “YEAH LET’S GIVE [FICTIONAL CHARACTER] THEIR RIGHTS!”, or worse, that “LET MY GAYS MARRY” sign (that you did not reblog, but I’ve seen it too many times on my dash today from other people I followed), is extremely dehumanizing, and reduces queer struggles into something a cartoonish analogy.”
I think that’s an important thing for us all to remember. While the Dumbledore signs are cute, there are tons of real gay people whose basic rights are in question this week. I understand the concept of using Dumbledore or another mainstream gay character as sort of a stand-in for the wider LGBT population, but I think we can all find more positive and inclusive ways to express our support.
Also, and as a Potter fan I can’t believe I didn’t realize this earlier:
Dumbledore was British. Same-sex marriage is legal there.I’m fucking out of it today. Same-sex marriage is not legal there, but civil partnerships are legal in the United Kingdom.
