fun fact: the first website I ever visited was the one for the Muppet Treasure Island movie when it first came out in 1996. My dad had brought his laptop home from work and we plugged in the phone cord. Trying to get the Compuserve to work was a challenge, and it felt like it took HOURS for the site to load in. (It probably did, for all we know. This was 1996 dial-up, after all.)
I remember thinking that it was SO COOL, being able to plug the computer into the telephone and see all kinds of neat things! I’d always been around computers, waking up at 6am to turn on my dad’s old clunker of a laptop that we’d plugged into this massive series-of-tubes monitor just so I could go through the Windows 3.1 tutorial. But this? This was new and interesting and DIFFERENT!
I was smitten from the first beep.
Times have obviously changed, internet connection speeds are lightning-fast compared to the chugging pixelated downloads of the past, and it has proven a valuable tool in keeping me connected to friends and family around the world, as well as being a veritable fountain of information (of all varieties, good and bad.)
So thanks, Tim Curry and Kermit and Miss Piggy. My life is forever better because of you.
